A record 730 skiers took to the Swedetown ski trails in Calumet for the 37th running of the UP Health System Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon on Saturday. Racers could choose from among seven races of various distances and techniques.
Two former U.P. college skiers took the victories in the 50km skiathlon: former Michigan Tech standout Deedra Irwin of Pulaski, Wisconsin, and Northern Michigan alumnus Kyle Bratrud of Marquette, Michigan. Bratrud eked out the win with just 1.4 seconds to spare. Continue reading →
Given the forecast for Friday afternoon (March 10) – cold and windy and below-zero wind chills, the Junior Bear Chase has been cancelled.
Saturday’s (March 11) Great Bear Chase will continue as scheduled, with a record number of skiers!
Last year saw a record number of skiers for the Great Bear Chase and the 2017 version has already surpassed those numbers, closing in on 700 skiers. The Great Bear Chase includes the signature 50km skiathlon (25km classic and 25km freestyle), and 50km, 25km, and 10km races for both classic and freestyle. The 9th annual Glide N Gorge will take place Saturday, March 4, from noon until 3 pm at the Maasto Hiihto ski trails in Hancock. The event starts at the Four Seasons Chalet (Hancock Driving Park) and includes a combination of skiing and deliciousness! You’ll ski a 5km course, including the beautiful Swedetown Creek, and have two food stops along the way, then a dessert table and live music back at the Chalet. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event.
