2:00 pm: Retro Ski

2:00 pm: Retro Ski

February 5, 2017

Retro ski will have a different format this year. Skiers will meet at the Tomasi trailhead at 12:30 and head out for some fun backcountry skiing through the Torangeau property and then on to Ruby Marsh. We’ll probably take set tracks back to the trailhead but the group can decide if it wants more backcountry skiing. After all that we’ll retire to a local restaurant of the group’s choice for beverages and food.

Bring your wood skis, bamboo poles, knickers and wool clothing if you have it but if you don’t, don’t let that stop you from joining the group. All skiers are welcome regardless of ability or equipment. Speaking of ability, if abilities vary widely, we can split into two groups – an easy tour and an extended tour – and still feast together after we all are finished. Please contact either Jay Green at 487-5411 or John Diebel 281-1486 at if you are coming so we have an idea of numbers and can delay leaving somewhat if someone is late; best to speak to one of us as we’re both in and out of town frequently and only one of us may make the tour. Also call with any questions or concerns.

New this year – kids will participate for free, thanks to sponsorship from the Portage Health Foundation.

The Barneløpet features groomed and marked courses of 1, 2, 4, and 6 km to accommodate children of differing ages and abilities. Parents can ski with their children if they wish, to make it a family outing!

7:00 pm: Green Film Series: "Just Eat It" A Food Waste Story"

7:00 pm: Green Film Series: "Just Eat It" A Food Waste Story"

February 16, 2017

Filmmakers & food lovers Jen & Grant dive into the issue of waste from farms, through retail, to the back of their own fridge. Catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered food are compelling.

Location: G002 Hesterberg Hall, Michigan Tech Forestry Bldg. (all films)

Time: 7:00-8:30 pm; enjoy coffee, dessert and facilitated discussion

Cost:  FREE, $3 suggested donation
