Nordic Skiing in Full Swing in the Keweenaw

Posted on

Dec. 26, 2011 – It hasn’t been a banner snow year – at least not yet – but there has been enough for the groomers to work their magic at Michigan Tech and at Swedetown. Both of these area Nordic centers report very good conditions with all trails open. That’s 30km at Swedetown and 24km at Michigan Tech.

The heavy, wet snow that came early in December allowed groomers to build a base that has lasted through several warm days. While the lake effect snows have yet to kick in, the area has had enough 2-3″ days to both build the base and provide a nice surface for skiers.
Swedetown and Tech both have enough base to set tracks, as well. Classic skiers will find 24km tracked at Tech, while Swedetown has tracked 16-17km.

Temperatures are expected to continue to be at or below freezing, allowing for the preservation of base.

Chassell has been rolling and the upper 5km is now tracked. Skiers are encouraged to use the trailhead on Archambeau Road, which intersects with Chassell-Painesdale road about a mile south of Paradise Road. Because of the rougher ground conditions, Churning Rapids and Maasto Hiihto have not yet groomed.
