Barnelopet Slated for February 7

The annual Barnelopet kids ski event will take place Sunday, February 7, 2016, at the Maasto Hiihto ski trails. Registration begins at 1 pm at the Four Seasons Chalet behind the Houghton County Arena in Hancock. The event features races for youth, ages 3 – 17, with distances of 1, 2, 4, and 6 km. All ages line up to race beginning with 6km distance at 2 pm. For more information, contact Wayne Stordahl at 9o6.482-0292. CPR Class offered at Swedetown Chalet Jan. 25 (2016)

What if you are out skiing or hiking and someone collapses with cardiac arrest? Would you know what to do while waiting for 911 responders to arrive?


The American Heart Association – Family and Friends Adult Hands-only CPR class will be offered at the Swedetown Chalet Monday, January 25, at 7 p.m. The course, offered in cooperation with the Aspirus Keweenaw Education Department, includes chest compression instruction and practice on dummies as well as demonstration of an AED (automated defibrillator). “The Birkebeiners: America and Norway” Presentation Coming

Joe Iverson will give a talk “The Birkebeiners:  America and Norway” on Thursday, January 21, at the Michigan Tech Forestry Building, Hesterberg Hall G002. Iverson, the pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell, will share his experiences cross country ski racing in the American Birkebeiner in Cable, Wisconsin, and in Lillehammer, Norway. Sponsored by the Sons of Norway and the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Club, the event opens with a social at 6:30 and the talk at 7:30 pm.

Nordic Ski Chili Chase for Charity Feb. 13

Houghton High School’s National Honor Society is hosting its 3rd annual Chili Chase for Charity cross-country ski race and chili lunch on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Trails.

  • Registration opens at 7:30 am
  • 5k Skate at 9:00 am
  • 5k Classic at 9:05 am
  • 10k Freestyle at 10:00 am 

All proceeds will be donated to SKY (Simple Kindness for Youth), a local charity that helps the youth in our area, and the MTU ski trails.
