Green Film Series Continues March 20 with “Gasland”
The 2014 Green Film Series continues on Thursday, March 20, with the presentation of “Gasland,” focusing on the natural gas drilling process known as fracking. The documentary will be shown at 7 pm in G002 Hesterberg Hall (forestry building) at Michigan Tech, followed by discussion and refreshments. A $3 donation is suggested.
Focusing on U.S. communities impacted by natural gas drilling (fracking), the director, Josh Fox, spent time with citizens in their homes and on their land as they relayed stories of natural gas drilling including a variety of chronic health problems directly traceable to contamination of their air, of their water wells or of surface water. Hydraulic fracturing was exempted from the Safe Drinking Water Act in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
The facilitated discussion will be led by Richelle Winkler, assistant professor of Sociology and Demography at Michigan Tech. The film is cosponsored by the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, Michigan Tech Center for Water & Society, Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and Keweenaw Land Trust.
