Glide ‘n Gorge Coming March 1 at Maasto

KNSC_logoThe 7th Annual Glide N Gorge will take place Sunday March 1, 2015, from 12-3 p.m. at the Maasto Hiihto Ski Trails in Hancock.  The event covers 3.5 miles of scenic trails with three stops for food along the way.  You can either classic ski or snowshoe.  The suggested donation will be $20 with all proceeds going to trail maintenance.  The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club sponsors the event. Swedetown Winter Trails Day January 18

swedetownlogoSwedetown Winter Trails Day is Sunday, January 18, 2015. Predictions are for a fine winter day, so bring your camera!

Free skiing and snowshoeing offered all day and the normal day pass rate of $8 is not charged on Winter Trails Day. If you have a membership at other local trails, this will be a great time to visit Swedetown and try all of the great trails. Swedetown Trails Club members will be on hand to suggest trails to explore.

Swedetown Parking Notice for January 3

For those planning to ski at Swedetown on Saturday, January 3, Ski Tigers begins its season that day at 11 am. We anticipate more skiers than usual, given that Michigan Tech is hosting the U.S. national championships. The Swedetown folks suggest skiing early or later. Parking will be full from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 due to Ski Tigers families.

Tech Trails Closures During Nordic Nationals

With Michigan Tech hosting the U.S. Cross Country Championships January 4-10, 2015, there will be trail closures on most days and grooming will concentrate on the race courses. Recreational skiers are advised to ski at one of the other area trails during this week to avoid frustration at encountering fenced-off courses and closed trailheads.

Throughout the week, the trailhead at the Michigan Tech softball fields and the Nara trailhead will be open, although some trails will be closed. Superior and Isle Royale loops, accessed via the softball fields, will be groomed for skate and classic and open throughout the week.
