Copper Island Classic on Hiatus in 2013

Posted on

The annual Copper Island Classic ski race, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in Chassell, will go on hiatus this year. A series of events have transpired that will prevent the event from being held. The race has been held for 30-plus years. Jim Tervo has done the planning and organizing for many of those and deserves a huge thank-you for making it quite a bit of fun, particularly with the “guess your time” category that gives everyone a shot at podium glory! Grooming Continues at Tech, Swedetown – More Trails Tracked

Posted on

December 27, 2012 — Michigan Tech and Swedetown continue to have good conditions, despite the low snowfall so far this year. Other area trails are not grooming.

At Tech, all trails are being rolled and/or dragged daily, with just a few thin spots. All trails that connect with Core Loop are also tracked (all of the upper and competition loops). Isle Royale and Superior are also tracked. The lower and Nara trails have good coverage for skating, but not enough depth for tracks.

Swedetown trails are rolled and/or dragged daily, again with a few thin spots. Trails with tracks now include Valley, Pine, lower Powderhouse, Cedar, Tamarack, Greenstone, Mam Bear, and Baby Bear. If you are using your good skis, it is best to avoid Papa Bear.

Chassell and Maasto Hiihto/Churning Rapids remain ungroomed (Chassell is rolled, but the lower 5km is in very rough shape and there are many thin spots on the upper loop).
