Three scenic trail races to challenge the toughest runners

Run the Keweenaw, billed as a “festival of trail running,” will draw some 250 participants to the rugged Keweenaw Peninsula this weekend. The festival, based in Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor July 13-14, features three races on some of the most challenging and scenic single-track trails in the Midwest.

Proceeds from the two-day, three-race event support local trail development and maintenance through Keweenaw Trail Alliance and youth cross-country skiing through Copper Country Ski Tigers.

The festival begins Friday night in Copper Harbor with registration, a product expo, and a pre-race meal to raise funds for the Copper Harbor Trails Club.

The first race is Saturday morning, the Mt. Baldy Hill Climb in Eagle Harbor, featuring a stunning view of Lake Superior after climbing Mt. Baldy through The Nature Conservancy’s Helmut and Candis Stern Preserve, and a light post-race meal.

Saturday afternoon the competition continues with short course races around the trails of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Courses will be set for age groups ranging from 6 to 65 and older, with special awards to those in middle and high school. This event also offers a non-competitive option for those who prefer to hike rather than run.

The festival concludes Sunday morning with the 25-kilometer (16 mile) Carl Olson Memorial Adventure Run on the hilly Copper Harbor Trails. Runners may enter any one, two, or all three events.

Awards will be given to the top-three finishers in each age and gender group in each race, and the top-five overall for the three races based on total time. Awards include local honey from Algomah Acres, local maple syrup from Soldan Farms, handmade jewelry and photography of Keweenaw landscapes.
