Mountain Bike Rondevous Coming July 25

The second annual Michigan Tech 12-Hour Mountain Bike Rondevous is scheduled for July 25, 2015, at the Michigan Tech Trails. Race start is 9:30, with race-day registration and packet pickup available from 8-9 am in the Race Secretary’s building. Course is approximately 7.75 miles, which will allow 12-hour competitors to complete the race without requiring a headlamp. With both a 2- and 4-person team option for the 12-hour race, and a solo category available for the 6-hour race, there’s something for everyone! Awards go to the top 12-hour teams, as well as the top 3 individual 6-hour competitors.

Course includes some sections of ski trail for passing and recovery purposes, as well as an abundance of singletrack. Race is hosted by the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Nordic Ski, and Track and Field Teams, and all proceeds benefit the teams. Hope to see you there!

Trail Memberships Available for 2015-16

Trail memberships passes are now available for the 2015-16 season. Once again, the four main trail systems – Chassell, Michigan Tech, Maasto Hiihto/Churning Rapids, and Swedetown – offer a combination membership with a 10% discount. You can choose any combination of the four trails. Prices are here, and you can purchase memberships online. or at the Michigan Tech Central Ticket Office, the Einerlei in Chassell, Downwind Sports in Houghton, and Cross Country Sports in Calumet. During the winter, passes are also available at the Swedetown Chalet.

While the largest expense is winter grooming, all of the trails have year-round obligations, including building and maintaining mountain bike trails, equipment maintenance and repair, bridge and boardwalk construction, and more. All trail users – summer and winter – should purchase a membership to support their favorite trails.

Canal Run Registration Open; 40th Anniversary Event

The Canal Run is celebrating 40 years on Saturday July 18, 2015. Be a part of history and celebrate this great community event by participating or volunteering.  Registration is open for the 5-mile walk, 5-mile run, 10-mile walk, 10-mile run or the half marathon! This is the Keweenaw’s premier running event, with chip timing, a commemorative Canal Run t-shirt, free professional photo downloads and much, much more. Health & Safety Fair; Free Skin Cancer Screening June 6

U.P. Health System Portage will hold its annual health and safety fair on Saturday, June 6, 2015, starting at 9 am. The event will include free skin cancer screening, as well as free screenings for total cholesterol, blood glucose, hemoglobin, bone density, blood pressure and many more. There will be tons of giveaways, chair massages, healthy food samples, great raffles, and a car seat clinic. The event runs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. (skin cancer screenings through 1 pm).
